Why Fitted Sheets Matter for Safe Sleep

When you’re setting up your baby’s cot, fitted cot sheets are designed to fit snugly over the mattress, with elasticated edges that hold the sheet securely in place. This close fit keeps the sheet smooth and secure beneath your baby, while reducing the amount of loose fabric around their sleep surface.

That secure fit keeps the sheet neatly around the mattress, rather than coming loose and shifting up around while they sleep. Australian safe-sleep guidance recommends using a firm, well-fitting mattress with a fitted cot sheet to create a secure sleep setup for your baby.

Find the Right Fabric for Your Sheets

When choosing fitted cot sheets, the fabric matters because your baby spends so much time snuggled up on them. A breathable, comfortable fabric makes for a pleasant sleep surface, while an easy-care option means you’ll always have fresh sheets ready to go.

- Organic Cotton

Organic cotton is a good choice if you’re looking for a natural fibre with a smooth, lightweight feel. Its simple, understated finish works beautifully in most nurseries and holds up well to regular use and repeated washing, while holding its shape and feel.

- Linen

Linen feels light and airy, with natural breathability that works particularly well in warmer weather. Its breathable weave allows more airflow around your baby, helping them stay comfortable when temperatures rise. It has a relaxed, textured feel and becomes softer with each wash, giving your baby’s cot a comfortable, lived-in finish.

- Jersey Stretch

Jersey has a soft, stretchy feel that fits smoothly around the mattress, making it easy to put on and take off when you’re changing the cot bedding. Its breathable, flexible fabric is comfortable for everyday use and has a soft feel against your baby’s skin. Most jersey stretch fitted cot sheets are machine washable, making them easy to freshen up.

Get the Fit Right for Your Baby’s Cot

The shape and dimensions of your cot mattress are the starting point when choosing fitted cot sheets. Take a quick look at the mattress measurements before buying, as standard and oval or round cots use different sheet shapes and sizing.

- Measure the mattress, not just the cot

Start with the mattress itself rather than relying on the cot’s name or style. Compare its length, width and depth with the sheet measurements to ensure the elasticated edges can wrap properly around the mattress and keep the sheet firmly in place.

- Match your sheets to the cot shape

Most traditional rectangular baby cots and mattresses, like the Boori Cot mattress, use standard cot mattresses, so look for fitted cot sheets made specifically for that shape and size. The sheet should fit smoothly across the mattress with the elastic sitting securely underneath the edges.

- Choose sheets made for curved cots

Oval and round cots have curved mattress edges, so they need sheets designed to follow those shapes. Look for sheets labelled for oval or round mattresses and check the listed dimensions against your mattress, as the curve and overall measurements both need to match for the sheet to fit properly.

- Don’t forget to check the mattress depth

The depth matters as well as the length and width. A sheet needs enough depth to wrap around the mattress securely without leaving excess fabric on the sleep surface, so check the sheet and mattress measurements together before buying. If you’re using cot bumpers, check their fit and compatibility with the cot and mattress, too.

How to Keep Your Cot Sheets Fresh

Fitted cot sheets are easy to work into your regular washing routine, with most fabrics suitable for machine washing. Follow the care instructions for the specific fabric, and wash sheets at the recommended temperature to keep them fresh and comfortable. Having a couple of fitted sheets on hand means you can quickly put on a fresh one while another is in the wash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose a fitted sheet over a flat sheet?

A fitted sheet is made to wrap securely around the cot mattress, with elasticated edges keeping it in place while your baby sleeps. This gives you a smooth, secure sleep surface and supports Australian safe-sleep guidance, which recommends keeping the cot free from loose sheets, blankets and other bedding.

---

What size fitted sheet do I need for a standard Australian cot?

Start by checking the measurements of your cot mattress, as dimensions can vary between cot designs. The fitted sheet should match the mattress size closely so it wraps securely around the edges without excess fabric.

---

Do oval and round cots need different sheets?

Yes, oval and round cots need sheets designed for their particular shape. Their curved mattress edges require a sheet that follows the shape properly, so look for fitted cot sheets made specifically for oval or round mattresses and check the listed dimensions.

---

Which fabric is best for a baby’s sensitive skin?

Organic cotton, jersey and linen can all be comfortable choices for sensitive skin. Organic cotton has a smooth, natural feel, jersey offers a soft and stretchy finish, while linen is light and breathable, so you can choose based on the texture and feel you prefer for your baby’s cot.

---

How many cot sheets do I actually need?

Having two to three fitted cot sheets gives you a useful rotation for everyday bedding changes. You can keep a fresh sheet ready while another is being washed, without needing a large collection.

---

Can fitted cot sheets go in the washing machine?

Most fitted cot sheets can be machine-washed, but always check the care instructions for the particular fabric first. Follow the recommended wash temperature and drying instructions to keep your sheets fresh and in good condition.
