Baby Must Haves: Essentials for 3–12 Months
Baby must haves change quickly between three and twelve months as your little one rolls, sits, starts solids and begins to move. This guide covers the essentials for each new milestone, so you can buy as your baby grows.
For a full room-by-room list, see our baby checklists.
Baby must haves for starting solids
Once your baby is ready for solids, a high chair becomes an everyday item. Look at how easy it is to clean, how much space it takes up and whether it adjusts as your child grows. Add high chair accessories and meal time essentials as needed. See the Feeding Checklist.
Car seats
If you started with a capsule, you will move to a convertible car seat when your baby outgrows it. Check the shoulder height markers on the restraint rather than going by age alone. The Car Checklist has more.
Play and development
Bouncers and rockers give your baby a comfortable spot to sit while you are close by. As they get stronger, walkers and activity centres and play mats encourage movement. Always supervise and check the age guidance on each product.
Teething
Teething can start any time in the first year. Keep a few teething items on hand and have spares in the nappy bag.
Sleep
Most babies move into a cot during this stage. A sleep suit is a common next step once your baby has outgrown swaddling. See the Nursery Checklist.
Home safety
Once your baby is on the move, it is time to look at home safety products like gates and cupboard locks.
Travel and outings
A portable cot is handy for visits to family and holidays. See the Family Travel Checklist and Out and About Checklist.

FAQs
When do I need a high chair?
Most families buy a high chair when their baby starts solids and can sit up with support. Your child health nurse can help you work out when your baby is ready.
When should I move from a capsule to a convertible car seat?
Move up when your baby reaches the upper shoulder height marker on the capsule, as shown on the restraint label. Check the manufacturer's instructions for your specific model.
Are walkers and activity centres suitable for every baby?
Each product has its own age and development guidance. Always read it, supervise your baby, and use these items for short periods as part of a mix of floor play.
