The Bath and Care Checklist

Everything for a calm bath routine and everyday care, in one list you can tick off.

A warm bath is a simple way to wind down before bed, and it is easier when everything is within reach before you start. This checklist covers the baby bath essentials and the everyday care items you will use from week one. Tick items off as you go and your progress is saved on this device.

You will need it from week one

Bath time

1

Baby bath or bath support

A baby bath or bath support holds your newborn at a comfortable height and angle. A stand saves your back. Never leave your baby alone in or near water, even for a moment.

2

Bath accessories

A bath thermometer, rinse jug and kneeler make bath time simpler. Aim for water at around 37 to 38 degrees, and always test it before your baby goes in.

3

Towels and washcloths

Hooded towels keep your baby's head warm after the bath, and soft washcloths are gentle on new skin. Two or three of each covers laundry days.

4

Bath toys

Bath toys turn washing into play once your baby can sit. Choose toys that drain and dry fully.

5

Baby skincare

A gentle wash and a moisturiser made for babies are usually all you need. Newborn skin is delicate, so introduce one product at a time.

A digital thermometer, nail clippers or a file, and a nasal aspirator are worth having before you need them at 2am.

Bath and Care Checklist FAQs

What do I need for a baby's first bath?

For a first bath you need a baby bath or bath support, warm water at around 37 to 38 degrees, a soft washcloth, a towel and a clean nappy and outfit laid out ready. A bath thermometer takes the guesswork out of the water temperature.

How often should I bathe a newborn?

A newborn does not need a bath every day. Two or three baths a week is plenty in the early weeks, with a daily wash of the face, neck, hands and nappy area in between.

What temperature should a baby's bath be?

A baby's bath should be around 37 to 38 degrees Celsius. Run cold water first, then hot, mix well and test with a bath thermometer or your wrist before your baby goes in.

Do I need a baby bath or can I use the big bath?

You can use either. A baby bath or bath support uses less water and holds a newborn at a safer, more comfortable angle, which many parents find easier in the first months.

What skincare does a newborn need?

Most newborns need very little skincare. Plain water is enough at first, then a mild, fragrance-free baby wash and a moisturiser if the skin is dry. Speak to your child health nurse or GP about any rash or persistent dryness.

What should be in a baby health kit?

A basic baby health kit has a digital thermometer, nail clippers or a file, a nasal aspirator, and a soft brush or comb. You will find these in our baby health essentials range.
