The Out and About Checklist

What to take when you leave the house with your baby, in one list you can tick off.

Getting out the door is easier when the gear is sorted and the bag is already packed. This checklist covers what you push, what you carry and the nappy bag essentials that go inside. Tick items off as you go and your progress is saved on this device.

1

Pram

The pram is the piece you will use most outside the house. Check that it suits your baby from birth, either with a lie-flat seat or a bassinet, and that the folded size fits your car boot.

2

Pram organiser

An organiser clips to the handlebar and keeps your phone, keys and a drink within reach. Check the weight limit so the pram stays stable.

3

Rain cover

A rain cover keeps your baby dry on wet days. Many are made for a specific pram, so check the fit for your model.

4

Sun cover

A sun cover adds shade on bright days. Choose one that lets air flow through, and never drape a blanket over the pram.

A footmuff keeps your baby warm in the pram through the cooler months. Check it is compatible with your pram's harness.

6

Cup holder

A cup holder is a small extra that makes long walks easier. Most are brand specific, so match it to your pram.

7

Baby carrier

A carrier keeps your baby close and your hands free, which helps on stairs, public transport and quick trips. Check the weight range and follow the manufacturer's positioning guidance.

8

Nappy bag

A nappy bag holds everything on this list. Backpacks spread the weight across both shoulders, and totes are quicker to reach into. Look for wipe-clean lining and separate pockets.

Out and About Checklist FAQs

What should I pack in a nappy bag?

The nappy bag essentials are nappies, wipes, a change mat, nappy disposal bags, a spare outfit, a bib or burp cloth, and feeding supplies. Add a dummy if your baby uses one, a hat and a small toy. A nappy bag with separate pockets makes each item easier to find.

How many nappies should I pack for a day out?

A common rule of thumb is one nappy for every two hours you plan to be out, plus two spares. Newborns often need changing more often, so pack extra in the early weeks.

Do I need a pram and a baby carrier?

You do not need both, but many families use both. A pram suits longer walks and carries your bags, while a baby carrier is easier on stairs, in crowds and on public transport.

When can I take my newborn out?

You can take a healthy newborn outside from the first days, dressed for the weather and shaded from direct sun. If you have any concerns, check with your midwife, child health nurse or GP first.

What pram accessories do I really need?

The most used pram accessories are a rain cover, a sun cover and an organiser. Footmuffs and cup holders are optional. Many accessories are made for one brand or model, so check compatibility in the product details before you buy from our pram accessories range.

How do I protect my baby from the sun in the pram?

Use the pram's canopy, a breathable sun cover and a hat, and stay in the shade where you can. Do not cover the pram with a blanket or wrap, because it can trap heat.
