How to choose a baby capsule or convertible car seat
- Choose between a baby capsule (birth to around 12 months, carried in and out of the car) and a convertible car seat that covers birth to about 4 years.
- Check the installation method suits your car: ISOFIX connectors, a seatbelt install, or both.
- A rotating car seat makes lifting your child in and out easier, but it's heavier and usually costs more.
- Keep your child rear facing for as long as the seat allows, and use the shoulder height markers rather than age alone.
- Only use restraints certified to the Australian standard AS/NZS 1754, and always connect the top tether.
- If you're unsure about fitting, have the seat installed or checked by a qualified restraint fitter.
Car seat comparison FAQs
Should I buy a capsule or go straight to a convertible car seat?
A capsule clips in and out of a base and onto many prams, so you can move a sleeping baby without waking them. A convertible seat stays in the car but lasts longer, typically from birth to about 4 years. Many families use a capsule first, then move to a convertible seat.
What is an ISOFIX car seat, and do I need one?
An ISOFIX car seat attaches to anchor points built into your car with rigid connectors, which can make it easier to get a firm fit. You don't need ISOFIX: seatbelt installations are safe when done correctly, and in Australia the top tether is still used either way. Check your vehicle handbook to see if your car has ISOFIX points before you buy.
Why do the rear-facing ages differ between seats?
Each seat has its own shoulder height markers and limits. The chart shows what each brand states for that model. Always follow the markers on the seat itself.
When can my baby face forward in a car seat in Australia?
Under Australian road rules, babies under 6 months must travel rear facing. From 6 months to 4 years, children can use a rear-facing or forward-facing restraint with an inbuilt harness. Keeping your child rear facing for as long as the seat's markers allow is recommended. The rear-facing column shows what each brand states.
Why are some specs shown as a dash?
We only list figures the brand has supplied on our product page. A dash means the figure isn't listed yet. Contact our team and we'll check it for you.
